Review

Kali Uchis really knocked it out of the park with her debut studio album, "Isolation." Released in 2018, this album is like a musical kaleidoscope, blending elements of Brazilian-jazz, doo-wop, funk, bedroom pop, and reggaetón. The critics loved it too, giving it an impressive score. The opening track sets the tone with its Brazilian-jazz vibe, reminding me of Flora Purim, and from there, Kali takes us on a journey through her incredible vocal range and powerful storytelling.

Her voice has echoes of legends like Billie Holiday and Amy Winehouse, which is a treat in itself. The album features a mix of upbeat tracks and soulful melodies tackling deep themes like love, life, and the hardships of industry exploitation. Some of the standout tracks for me are "In My Dreams," with its lo-fi charm alongside Gorillaz, and "Your Teeth on My Neck," which mixes peppy beats with serious lyrics about labor inequity. "Isolation" is a strong debut that showcases Kali Uchis' artistry and her ease at navigating through various musical styles—it’s a joy to listen to! - Sofia
