Review

Somewhere between a turntable and a tailgate, Double Wide spins its grin. Uncle Kracker’s debut solo album takes the Kid Rock-adjacent energy of Detroit’s rap-rock scene and polishes it into something looser, sunnier, and—frankly—friendlier. Released in 2000, it’s a time capsule of turn-of-the-century optimism, all twangy swagger and sing-along hooks that feel built for open windows and cheap beer.

“Follow Me” is the record’s golden ticket, that smooth, steel-guitar-tinted hit that made Kracker a household name. But listen deeper and you find a cocktail of country, hip-hop, and blue-eyed soul that’s as strange as it is sincere. “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah” and “Heaven” ride their grooves with radio polish, while “Better Days” brushes against something almost tender—proof there’s more heart under the smirk than you might expect.

Sure, it’s dated in places, a bit too slick, and probably not designed for scrutiny. But Double Wide never pretended to be profound—it’s about feeling good when you’ve got no reason not to. And for that, it still goes down easy. - Joey
