Review

"Room on Fire," The Strokes' 2003 sophomore ride, cranks it up while keeping that raw, garage rock vibe from their debut, "Is This It." This album is like taking a smooth, polished highway after a dirt road—still gritty at heart but with a bit more shine. Tracks like "Reptilia," "Meet Me in the Bathroom," and "12:51" are loaded with hooks and melodies that'll stick to your brain like bugs on a windshield.

The decision to ride back with their original producer, Gordon Raphael, after a brief detour with Nigel Godrich, gave "Room on Fire" that cohesive, well-oiled machine feel. Critics mostly gave it thumbs up, appreciating that they didn’t veer off their rock ‘n’ roll path too much. Some folks grumbled that it felt like a sequel to "Is This It," but hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The album hit gold status from the RIAA and cruised up to number four on the US Billboard 200. In a nutshell, "Room on Fire" is a killer follow-up, proving The Strokes know exactly how to build on success without losing their edge. - James
