Review

"Labcabincalifornia" by The Pharcyde, released back in '95, really brings something special to the table of alternative hip hop and jazz rap. Now, I gotta tell ya, this album feels a bit different from their first one, "Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde." It’s a whole lot more introspective and kinda tugs at the heartstrings with its themes of drug abuse and fractured relationships. The Pharcyde and Jay Dee, who took the lead on production alongside folks like Diamond D and M-Walk, did a fine job keeping the sound deep yet accessible.

One of the neat things about this album is how The Pharcyde’s got this special way of telling stories, mixing those smooth jazz tones with the beats of hip hop. Whether it's the track "Runnin'," which did pretty well on the charts, or something more laid-back like "She Said," each song brings its own flavor. And then there’s that video for "Drop" directed by Spike Jonze—it's something else, playing it all backwards and whatnot. It might not have hit the heights of their first album commercially, but "Labcabincalifornia" has definitely earned its stripes over the years. It's worth a listen for anyone fond of The Pharcyde or just looking for some quality music. - Mia
