Review

'The Papas & The Mamas' from 1968 is that perfect record for when you want to hear The Mamas & The Papas getting a little weirder and darker. This album might not have crashed the top ten like their earlier stuff, but don't sleep on it - the vocal harmonies here are just as gorgeous as ever, just wrapped in more experimental arrangements. Cass Elliot's version of 'Dream a Little Dream of Me' is the standout hit, really showing why she would eventually break out solo. The album has this cool cover with interchangeable faces that perfectly matches the playful-yet-serious vibe of the music inside.

You can really hear the band evolving on tracks like 'Safe in My Garden' and 'Midnight Voyage,' blending their folk roots with psychedelic touches that were everywhere in '68. There's this beautiful world-weariness throughout songs like 'Too Late' and 'Rooms' that hits different than their sunnier early work. 'Gemini Childe' is another personal favorite that shows how creative they were getting toward the end of their time together. For anyone digging through crates for some late-60s folk-rock that balances darkness with harmony, this album deserves a dedicated listen with good headphones. - Drew
