Review

The Avalanches dropped "Wildflower" in 2016 after making us wait sixteen years, and honestly, it's like they spent that whole time digging through every record store on the planet. This thing is a wild ride—22 tracks of samples stacked on samples, creating this trippy audio experience that bounces from R&B grooves to orchestral flourishes without breaking a sweat. "Frankie Sinatra" throws calypso-klezmer into the mix (yeah, you read that right), while "The Noisy Eater" features Biz Markie munching away over Beatles loops, because why not? Tracks like "Because I'm Me" and "Saturday Night Inside Out" hit that sweet spot of nostalgia mixed with something totally fresh, proving Robbie Chater and the crew still know how to turn dusty vinyl into pure gold.

"Livin' Underwater (Is Something Wild)" and "Kaleidoscopic Lovers" bring those summer vibes that make you want to roll the windows down and forget about your responsibilities. The whole album plays like one continuous fever dream—sometimes you're floating through "If I Was A Folkstar," other times you're getting lost in the extended mix of "Frankie Sinatra" that just keeps giving. Sure, some folks will tell you it doesn't quite reach the heights of "Since I Left You," their legendary debut, but "Wildflower" still earned major props from critics and charted well in Australia and the UK. It's packed with enough production magic and creative sampling to remind everyone why The Avalanches are legends at this plunderphonics game. A solid comeback that delivers the goods, even if the bar was set impossibly high. - Blake
