Review

Released in 1974, Tangerine Dream’s “Phaedra” is a trailblazer in the electronic music realm, marking the band's ascent to international stardom and solidifying their place in the Berlin School genre. Anchored by the 17-minute title track, the album explores deep, dark sound realms with a sequencer-driven style that defined a generation. This piece was evocative of the analog technology's limitations, birthing a sound both rich and haunting.

Edgar Froese, Christopher Franke, and Peter Baumann expertly wove their talents together, shaping tracks like “Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares,” with Froese wielding the Mellotron to create a cosmic dreamscape. “Movements of a Visionary” propels listeners into uncharted territories with its otherworldly VCS3 sounds and sequencer rhythms. The closing track, “Sequent C’,” features Baumann's ethereal flute, a beautiful echo to end the sonic journey. Recorded at The Manor in England and released on Virgin Records, “Phaedra” not only captivated the UK, earning a gold disc and charting at number 15, but also laid the groundwork for future electronic and ambient trailblazers like Steve Roach. - Odessa
