Review

I still get so hyped whenever I listen to 'Steal This Album!' - it's that perfect blend of heavy metal and experimental sounds that only System of a Down can pull off. Released in 2002 as a follow-up to 'Toxicity,' this record came with some drama! After rough mixes leaked online as 'Toxicity II,' the band decided to properly polish these tracks and release them officially. What makes this album extra special is that band members Serj Tankian and John Dolmayan consider it among their favorite SOAD works, which says a lot about its quality despite its unplanned origins.

The production team behind this album was stellar - guitarist Daron Malakian collaborated with the legendary Rick Rubin, recording at Cello Studios in Hollywood. Engineers like Dwight Hume and mixers like Andy Wallace helped create that fuller, more refined sound that made these tracks shine compared to the leaked versions. And what a fantastic mix of songs they delivered! From the frantic energy of 'Chic 'N' Stu' to the politically charged 'Boom!' and the intensity of 'Mr. Jack,' each track carries SOAD's trademark of socially conscious lyrics wrapped in their uniquely chaotic musical style.

Even with its somewhat unusual release circumstances, 'Steal This Album!' managed to climb to number 15 on the US Billboard 200 - pretty impressive! The album packs a wild punch in just 43 minutes, swinging between aggressive anthems like 'F*** The System' and more contemplative moments on tracks like 'Thetawaves' and 'Innervision.' It's fascinating how SOAD transformed what could have been a disaster (the leak) into this creative triumph that continued their sonic evolution while staying true to their roots. Whenever I need that perfect early 2000s alternative metal fix that's equal parts frenzied and thought-provoking, this is still one of my go-to albums. - Ava

Artist Bio

System of a Down is an American-Armenian rock band from California that formed in 1994, bringing together elements of alternative metal, nu-metal, hard rock, and Armenian folk influences. The band started releasing music in the late 1990s, with their breakthrough self-titled debut album in 1998 and the critically acclaimed *Toxicity* in 2001, known for its socially and politically charged lyrics. Their lineup includes Serj Tankian, Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian, and John Dolmayan, and their unique sound is marked by unpredictable structures and a mix of aggressive riffs and operatic vocals. They achieved notable milestones with the double No. 1 album releases of *Mezmerize* and *Hypnotize* in 2005, joining only a few acts to reach this chart feat. Fans of bands like Rage Against the Machine, Slipknot, and Deftones might find System of a Down’s approach to metal particularly interesting.
