Review

'Down On The Upside' by Soundgarden is a freaking rollercoaster of sound that'll make your ears do a double-take. Released in '96, this bad boy shows the band flexing their musical muscles and breaking free from their grunge cage. They threw caution to the wind and went wild with styles, mixing in some jangly R.E.M. vibes in 'Switch Opens' and even tossing mandolins into the punk-Americana cocktail of 'Ty Cobb'. Talk about a musical identity crisis, but in the best way possible!

The songwriting on this album is like a mood ring - one minute you're headbanging to the aggressive riffs of 'Pretty Noose', and the next you're getting all introspective with 'Burden in My Hand'. It's like Soundgarden decided to take us on a journey through their collective psyche, and let me tell you, it's one hell of a trip. While some critics at the time were all "meh" about it, 'Down On The Upside' still managed to climb to number two on the Billboard charts. Not too shabby for an album that dared to be different, right? - Tessa
