Review

'Repentless' is a fuckin' freight train of thrash metal, barreling down the tracks with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer to the face. Slayer's twelfth studio album doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it sure as hell sets it on fire and sends it careening into a pit of rabid metalheads. The absence of Jeff Hanneman is felt, but Kerry King steps up to the plate and swings for the goddamn fences. Gary Holt and Paul Bostaph join the fray, proving they've got the chops to keep up with Slayer's relentless assault.

This album is a middle finger to anyone who thought Slayer might soften up after three decades in the game. Tracks like 'Repentless' and 'Take Control' are pure adrenaline, with riffs that could strip paint and Tom Araya's vocals sounding like he's gargling battery acid. 'Piano Wire', one of Hanneman's final contributions, stands out as a twisted reminder of what we've lost. Terry Date's production keeps things raw and in-your-face, just the way Slayer fans like it. It might not be breaking new ground, but 'Repentless' is a solid slab of thrash that'll have you banging your head until your neck snaps. - Kaelin
