Review

Let me tell you somethin' about Robert Johnson's 'King of the Delta Blues Singers, Vol. II'. This ain't just another collection of dusty old blues tracks, my friend. No sir, this is the sound of a man's soul laid bare on wax, captured in those fleeting moments when the devil wasn't looking.

Columbia Records put this treasure out in 1970, long after Johnson had gone to that great juke joint in the sky. But don't you think for a second that time had dulled the edge of his guitar or the ache in his voice. These sixteen tracks, cut back in '36 and '37, still had the power to make the hair on the back of your neck stand up and salute.

Now, some folks might tell you this album don't quite measure up to the first volume. But I say they're missin' the point. 'Vol. II' shows us a different side of Johnson - a man who could make you laugh as easily as he could make you cry. Just listen to 'They're Red Hot' or 'Phonograph Blues' and try to keep that foot from tappin'. And when he hits you with 'Sweet Home Chicago' or 'I Believe I'll Dust My Broom', well, that's when you know you're in the presence of royalty. The King of the Delta Blues, indeed. - Walter
