Review

Man, 'Automatic for the People' is one of those albums that just sticks with you. R.E.M. really outdid themselves on this one, diving into some heavy stuff like death and loss, but somehow making it beautiful and relatable. It's crazy to think this came right after 'Out of Time' - talk about a 180 in terms of vibe!

The music on this record is something else. You've got these haunting melodies that just tug at your heartstrings. 'Everybody Hurts' and 'Nightswimming' are the kind of songs that make you want to curl up with a blanket and just feel all the feels. And don't even get me started on 'Man on the Moon' - that Andy Kaufman tribute is pure genius.

But it's not all doom and gloom. These guys know how to shake things up. 'Ignoreland' comes in hot with some political fire, proving R.E.M. can do more than just make you cry. And those string arrangements? Pure magic. No wonder this album sold like hotcakes - 18 million copies worldwide is no joke. It's the kind of record that proves why R.E.M. are legends in the alt-rock game. - Preston
