Review

Nirvana's "MTV Unplugged in New York" album is a serious business, offering a historic performance that'll make you wanna rock out and sob in equal measure. Recorded in November '93 at Sony Music Studios in New York City, this release came seven months after Kurt Cobain's untimely demise and serves as a testament to the band's innovative approach to the MTV Unplugged format. I mean, these guys didn't play their biggest hits; they dug deep into their discography and covered some other bands for a wicked eclectic setlist.

The setlist features tracks like "About a Girl" and "Come as You Are," and even some sweet and sour covers from David Bowie, the Vaselines, and the Meat Puppets (on whom they collaborated for three tracks that'll knock your socks off). And let's not forget Kurt's emotional, often strained vocals adding that haunting quality to the songs - it's like they're singing straight from the heart. And, oh, the stage setting? Stargazer lilies, black candles, and a crystal chandelier? That's some eerie pre-funeral vibe that'd freak you out.

The music itself? Sparse, yet beautiful, thanks to the addition of cellist Lori Goldston and the Meat Puppets' Cris and Curt Kirkwood adding their magic to the acoustic ensemble. And here's the twist - they used some electric amplification, making it a unique and unforgettable performance. This album received all the critical love and even bagged a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance in '96. It debuted at number one, sold 8 times platinum, and cemented its status as one of the greatest live acoustic records ever and an iconic '90s album. It's not just a live album, it's a powerful and emotional window into Nirvana's creative genius. - Dave
