Review

Alright, lads and lasses, let's get down to brass tacks with Napalm Death's "Scum." Dropped on the unsuspecting world on July 1, 1987, this debut is a bloody assault on the senses that gave birth to grindcore. Imagine two feral cats fighting in an alley while a hardcore punk mosh pit rages around them—yeah, that's the A-side. Recorded in August '86, it's all anarcho-punk chaos with tracks like "Multinational Corporations" and "Instinct of Survival" firing off like machine-gun rounds, fast and bloody relentless.

Now, flip it over to the B-side, cranked out in May '87, and you've got a different beast on your hands. This half of the album's got its claws deeper in heavy metal, with lower-tuned guitars and riffs that could crush granite. "Siege of Power" and "Control" show off the band's knack for complex brutality, showcasing a sound shift more metalheads can get behind. The socially conscious lyrics take potshots at politics and morality, adding some cerebral ammo to the auditory blitzkrieg. Raw, gritty, and unapologetic—“Scum” isn't just an album; it's a bloody movement in the metal cosmos. - Carmen
