Review
'Love & Hate' was Kiwanuka's follow-up to his first album and damn, does it deliver. His collaboration with Danger Mouse, Inflo, and Paul Butler created this incredible fusion of soul that echoes legends like Marvin Gaye while still being unmistakably modern. The album doesn't shy away from exploring some heavy themes - identity struggles, resilience, and the whole mess of emotions that make us human. When he drops into those deep, reflective moments, you can feel it in your bones.
The opening track 'Cold Little Heart' sets the tone with this gut-punch intensity that carries through the entire record. 'Black Man in a White World' confronts racial identity with a frankness that's both personal and universal, while the title track 'Love & Hate' showcases his talent for crafting songs that stick with you. What makes this album special is how Kiwanuka balances self-reflection with these rich, textured arrangements - nothing feels overdone or shallow. It's the sound of an artist who knows exactly what he wants to say and has found the perfect way to say it. - Chase
