Review

Take a wild spin with MGMT’s 2008 debut, "Oracular Spectacular," an album that’s as eclectic as it is electrifying. It tosses you into a kaleidoscope of psychedelic, electronic, and indie rock vibes like clothes in a dryer—set on high spin, no less. And it doesn’t just dare to experiment; it dives headfirst with a grin. Every track pops with glossy production that's somehow also got that gritty garage band vibe, capturing the raw, experimental energy of youth wanting to thumb its nose at the norm.

Tracks like "Time to Pretend," "Electric Feel," and "Kids" are the golden trio here. "Time to Pretend" barrels through your speakers with a satirical sneer at the rock-star life, strapped to a rocket of bombastic electro-glam sounds. "Electric Feel" is like stumbling into a funky, fluorescent dance hall where Beck and Prince are the DJs—good luck not getting that groove stuck in your head. And "Kids"? It’s an infectious anthem that you’ll swear you’ve heard a million times, yet you’re pumped every time it hits. While some may squabble over the shifting soundscapes and vocal manipulations, these elements are precisely what stitch the album’s charm, revealing more quirks and hooks with each listen. - Leo

Artist Bio

MGMT is a duo from Middletown, Connecticut, formed by Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser in 2002 while they were students at Wesleyan University. They came to widespread attention after signing to Columbia Records and releasing their debut album "Oracular Spectacular" in 2007, which included hits like "Electric Feel" and "Kids." Blending psychedelic rock, indie, and synth-pop, MGMT have continued to evolve with albums such as "Congratulations," "Little Dark Age," and "Loss Of Life" (2024), occasionally dipping into more experimental or electronic territory. The group earned a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 2009 and have collaborated with artists like Ratatat and Steve Aoki. Fans of bands like Tame Impala, Empire of the Sun, or Passion Pit would likely enjoy MGMT's genre-blurring style and melodic sensibility.
