Review

Marcy Playground's self-titled debut album crashes onto the scene with a quirky blend of alternative rock and pop that's impossible to ignore. With "Sex and Candy" dominating the airwaves and staying atop the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart for an insane 15 weeks, it's a no-brainer why this track became a 90s anthem. The album carries a downbeat vibe, but the angst is masked by some downright catchy hooks and killer melodies. Mixed reviews be damned, this bad boy went platinum and sold over 1.4 million copies, proving critics don't always get the last word.

Tracks like "St. Joe on the Schoolbus" and "Sherry Fraser" might not have burned up the charts as brightly as "Sex and Candy," but they definitely kept the momentum going with solid radio and MTV2 airplay. John Wozniak’s production brings a rich, layered feel to the album, adding depth to Marcy Playground's sound. Sure, it has its imperfections, but this nostalgic gem is a slice of 90s alt-rock you won't regret spinning again. - Sydney
