Review

American Romance is Lukas Nelson’s first album released under his own name, stepping away from his longtime band Promise of the Real. Produced by Shooter Jennings, it’s a deeply personal and introspective record, released June 20, 2025 via Sony Music Nashville.

The album is built around classic Americana/country foundations — open roads, diners, heartbreak, loss, a search for meaning — but Nelson leans heavily into lyrical craft, letting small moments carry big emotional weight. Songs like “Ain’t Done” and “Outsmarted” balance hope and regret, while “Disappearing Light” (with Stephen Wilson Jr.) and “Friend in the End” (with Sierra Ferrell) bring haunting beauty through harmonies, sparse arrangements, and evocative imagery.

It isn’t without flaws — some songs feel familiar in theme and pace, and the album occasionally lapses into lyrical predictability. But Nelson’s voice — both in tone and in songwriting perspective — comes through with authenticity and confidence. On balance, American Romance is a strong solo debut: it stakes out a clear artistic identity, honors his roots, and points toward growth. - Marcus
