I've been absolutely loving Lola Young's latest album 'This Wasn't Meant for You Anyway' since it dropped in June 2024. Her sophomore effort builds brilliantly on what made her debut 'My Mind Wanders and Sometimes Leaves Completely' so special, while pushing her sound in exciting new directions. The way she blends R&B and soul with modern production feels both fresh and familiar, and her voice carries so much emotion it's impossible not to get swept up in her stories.
Despite that playfully dismissive title, this album feels incredibly inviting and personal. The standout tracks 'Messy' and 'Wish You Were Dead' showcase what makes Lola such a compelling artist - she creates these catchy, empowering songs that stick with you for days. I appreciate how straightforward and honest her lyrics are; she's not hiding behind metaphors when she has something to say about growth or confrontation.
What really impresses me about this album is how seamlessly Lola moves between different musical influences. The production throughout is polished without feeling overworked, giving her powerful vocals the perfect backdrop. You can really hear her confidence growing as an artist who's carving out her own unique space in music.
