Linda Ronstadt's 'Heart Like a Wheel' came along in '74 and changed the game for country-rock forever. Working with producer Peter Asher, she delivered a record that stripped away the fluff and let her incredible voice shine through in every note. What always struck me about this album was how Linda could jump from rock to country and back again without breaking a sweat - just listen to 'You're No Good' and then 'When Will I Be Loved' back-to-back if you don't believe me. The lady had range that could make a mountain look small, and she knew exactly what to do with it.
The way she handles the title track just about breaks your heart, showing off the tender side of her singing that could make a statue weep. Her take on Hank Williams' 'I Can't Help It If I'm Still In Love with You' proves she understood the soul of country music right down to its roots. This wasn't just another record in the bins - it was the moment Linda Ronstadt became LINDA RONSTADT, if you catch my meaning. Those crystal-clear arrangements let every nuance of her voice come through, creating something that sounds just as fresh today as it did when bell-bottoms were all the rage. That's the mark of something special in my book. - Rex
