Review
There's something undeniably thrilling about hearing those familiar synth swells again, isn't there? "Top Gun: Maverick (Music From The Motion Picture)" pulls off a tricky maneuver, honoring the leather-jacket-and-aviators cool of the 1986 original while soaring into present-day territory. The legacy cues are all here for us longtime fans, with "Danger Zone" and "Top Gun Anthem" igniting that same fist-pumping rush we felt watching Maverick buzz the tower the first time around. Then you've got fresh blood like Lady Gaga's "Hold My Hand" and OneRepublic's "I Ain't Worried," which slot in beautifully to give the whole thing emotional altitude and radio-ready shine.
What really impresses me is the momentum, that constant forward thrust like a jet screaming across the desert sky. Score pieces such as "Darkstar" and "Penny Returns (interlude)" keep the synth-bright DNA intact while dragging the franchise's sound into the modern era, cleanly produced and built for the big screen. This isn't some bloated, sprawling score; it's tight, confident, and entirely about speed, longing, and that breezy swagger Tom Cruise has perfected. Time machine rating: while it's clearly born of 2022, drop it into 1986 and it would've fit right alongside your VHS copy and a Trapper Keeper full of fighter jet doodles. - Jessica
