KIRBY came onto the scene with her debut EP 'Sis' in 2020, and honestly, I was immediately drawn in by how she effortlessly blends modern soul with nostalgic elements. The production from Homer Steinweiss and The Menahan Street Band really elevates the entire project with their use of live instruments, giving the music this authentic, warm feel that's hard to find these days. I couldn't stop replaying the seven tracks, especially after seeing her amazing NPR Tiny Desk performance and hearing her music featured in 'Insecure' on HBO.
What makes 'Sis' so special is how KIRBY's experience as a songwriter for major artists shines through in her own music - you can tell she knows exactly how to craft a melody that sticks with you. The EP strikes this perfect balance between fresh and familiar sounds, making it accessible yet unique in today's R&B landscape. Even though it's only seven tracks long, there's not a second wasted - each song brings something meaningful to the table, and I found myself completely wrapped up in her soulful vocals and heartfelt lyrics from beginning to end. - Ava
