Review
"Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin'" is an album I just can't get enough of. The way Kid Cudi blends his signature sound with everything from cosmic beats to emotional raps is truly impressive. I love how this 19-track journey takes you on a wild ride of ups and downs, from the darkest depths of personal struggle to the highest highs of recovery and hope. The fact that Kid Cudi's collaborators - an all-star lineup including André 3000, Pharrell Williams, and Willow Smith - bring their A-game to the table makes it a truly special listen.
One thing I think really sets "Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin'" apart is its cohesion. With two discs and an 86-minute runtime, you might expect the album to feel like a mishmash of ideas - but somehow, it all comes together to create this incredible, hopeful narrative that really speaks to you. As Chris Mench wrote, Kid Cudi's really managed to "recapture the heart of his music" with this one. The way the album effortlessly jumps between genres and moods adds to the sense that it's a deeply authentic expression of Cudi's experiences.
It's also worth noting that "Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin'" has real sentimental value. Around the time the album dropped, Kid Cudi opened up to fans about his own struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts. Hearing this music knowing the journey he went through to make it adds an extra layer of power to the message - this is music born from darkness and doubt, but that ultimately becomes a testament to the possibility of healing and hope. - Ava
