Review

Keith Whitley's 'Don't Close Your Eyes' is a country music gem that'll have you tapping your toes one minute and reaching for the tissues the next. Released in '88, this album was Whitley's swan song, and boy, did he go out with a bang! It's chock-full of honky-tonk stompers and tear-jerking ballads that showcase his incredible vocal range.

The title track 'Don't Close Your Eyes' is a real heartstring-puller, but it's not the only standout. 'When You Say Nothing at All' and 'I'm No Stranger to the Rain' both topped the country charts, proving Whitley could belt out a tune with the best of them. And let's not forget the rowdier tracks like 'Flying Colors' and 'Lucky Dog' - they're a nod to Whitley's wild club days and guaranteed to get your feet moving.

Garth Fundis and Blake Mevis did a stellar job on production, really letting Whitley's rich baritone shine through. It's no wonder this album went Platinum - it's a perfect blend of traditional and contemporary country that still holds up today. Whether you're a die-hard country fan or just dipping your toes in the genre, 'Don't Close Your Eyes' is an essential listen that'll leave you wanting more. - Ellis
