Review
Katie Gavin's solo debut "What A Relief" is a wild ride through love, loss, and self-discovery, all filtered through her remarkable ability to turn emotions into gut-wrenching songwriting. Blending indie pop and folk, she's cooked up a batch of tracks that showcase her raw honesty and knack for introspective storytelling. As she worked outside of her MUNA duties, Gavin's songwriting style shifted, embracing a more folk-infused sound - and it's a real winner.
There's no shortage of talent on this album, with Josette Maskin and Naomi McPherson from MUNA, along with Amber Bain of The Japanese House, helping shape the textured sound. Standout track "As Good as It Gets" with Mitski is a gut-check reflection on the harsh realities of romance. Meanwhile, "Aftertaste" and "Casual Drug Use" prove Gavin can knock out catchy folk-pop hooks like it's her day job. The whole thing's a testament to her growth as a solo artist, drawing inspiration from her days with MUNA while carving out her own path. Closing things off, "Today" wraps up Gavin's journey of self-discovery and independence, leaving a lasting mark on anyone who listens. - Chase
