Review

ILLENIUM's self-titled album, dropping in April 2023, is like a colorful mosaic bustling with future bass and rocktronic vibes while interlacing heartfelt melodies. The track "Starfall" masterfully combines infectious melodies with awe-inspiring future bass drops, earning it a shining spotlight. An eclectic array of collaborations further enriches the album, from Skylar Grey to All Time Low, offering a vibrant sonic palette. The single "Eyes Wide Shut," featuring Avril Lavigne and Travis Barker, radiates emotional resonance, embodying the unique fusion and his adeptness at crafting captivating tracks.

On the flip side, some fans and critics feel that a handful of the tracks don't immensely break new ground or end up eclipsed by a sense of déjà vu. While some of the rock-inspired efforts are hailed for their daring blend of sounds—as observed with "Shivering"—others fall into a less inspired category, with tracks like "You Were Right" not hitting the mark for all audiences. Even so, it's undeniable that beneath varied opinions lies a technically solid endeavor that represents a frontier of musical experimentation for Illenium. Despite its diverse reception, chunks of brilliance shine through, offering sparks of new direction and familiar warmth. - Kara
