Review

“Figure 8” by Elliott Smith sweeps you into a swirl of sound where sadness meets sweeping orchestral moments. I always find myself pausing life for a second when “Son of Sam” comes on—there’s an undeniable hint of brightness, even over all the bittersweet lines. It’s funny how much warmth sneaks through in the more richly produced tracks, especially when you consider that his earlier albums were mainly acoustic confessions.

There’s something so comforting about the way “Somebody That I Used to Know” circles back to that stripped-down honesty, almost like catching up with an old friend. Elliott's voice and guitar can be downright haunting on a quiet evening, pressing play as you watch the city outside your window. “Figure 8” doesn’t shy away from grand arrangements, but it never loses that intimate, searching heart at its core—and that’s why it still feels like a personal companion year after year. - Jennifer
