Review
Summer of '21 was a whirlwind for me, but "Private Space" became the soundtrack that somehow made perfect sense of all the chaos. Durand Jones & The Indications had been brewing something special, and their third outing proved they weren't content to just coast on retro charm anymore. The opening one-two punch of "Love Will Work It Out" and "Witchoo" grabbed me by the collar from the first listen, all synthy swagger and disco-funk grooves that had me dancing around my apartment like nobody was watching. These guys managed to take that classic soul foundation and dress it up in modern threads without losing an ounce of authenticity.
What really struck me about this record was how they weren't afraid to slow things down and get vulnerable when it mattered most. "Reach Out" and "I Can See" hit different during those late-night drives through the city, the kind of songs that make you pull over just to really absorb what you're hearing. Even tracks like "Ride or Die" and "The Way That I Do" showcase this beautiful balance between honoring the greats who came before while carving out their own distinct corner of the soul universe. The whole thing feels like flipping through a well-worn vinyl collection where every record tells its own story, but somehow they all belong together on the same shelf. - Caleb
