Review
Oh, let me tell you, Doja Cat's "Vie" is an absolute delight, a real celebration that takes us on a sparkling journey straight back to the 1980s. After her venture into rap with "Scarlet", she's gracefully pivoted back to pop, and honestly, mi gente, this vibrant return is just what we needed! The album's title, "Vie," which cleverly nods to both "life" and the Roman numeral five in French, sets the stage for a record brimming with themes of love, romance, and self-discovery, all wrapped in Doja's signature playful wit.
Musically, "Vie" is an energetic mosaic, expertly blending funk, disco, new jack swing, and dance-pop into a sound that feels both unified and wonderfully experimental. You can really hear her vocal dexterity shine on tunes like "Gorgeous" and "Stranger," where the synth-pop lightness sometimes gives way to moments of deeper thought. And when SZA joins in on "Take Me Dancing," it adds this dreamy, soulful dimension that just melts into your ears. Tracks such as "Couples Therapy" and "Lipstain" keep the momentum high with their super catchy hooks and irresistible, funky grooves.
What I truly adore about "Vie" is how it manages to honor those classic influences while still sounding completely modern and fresh. Doja's joyful vocal playfulness and sharp humor are on full display throughout, making for an incredibly engaging listen. From the immediate fun of “Jealous Type” and “AAAHH MEN!” to the buoyant energy of “Silly! Fun!” and “Acts of Service,” this album rarely loses its shine. It’s a beautiful showcase of Doja Cat's knack for rhythm and charisma, demonstrating her evolution as an artist who’s not afraid to take chances and, most importantly, have a fabulous time doing it. - Sofia
