Review

"Amala" by Doja Cat is like a wild night out in the city, full of unexpected turns and vibrant energy. This debut album dropped in 2018, but it didn't really catch fire until later when her viral hit "Mooo!" put her on the map. The album's a real mixed bag, jumping from genre to genre like a cab weaving through traffic. You've got tracks like "Go To Town" and "Cookie Jar" that are straight-up fire hydrants of explicit lyrics and racy vibes, while "Wine Pon You" and "Wild Beach" cool things down with some chill, oceanside feels.

Now, word on the street is that Doja wasn't too thrilled with how this album turned out. She was living that party life during the recording, blazing up and rushing to meet deadlines. It's like when you're running late for work and just throw on whatever's clean - it might not be your best look, but it gets the job done. Still, you can't deny the creativity here. I mean, who else is out there mixing Pachelbel's Canon with flexes about their luxury lifestyle? That's some next-level street symphony right there. Even though it took a minute to climb the charts, peaking at 138 on the Billboard 200 in late 2019, "Amala" shows Doja Cat's got the chops to navigate the urban jungle of the music scene. - Sable
