Review
Cults` second album, 'Static,' dropped in 2013, and you can really feel the shift in their vibe. It leans darker and moodier compared to their debut, mixing in orchestral elements and a touch of atmospheric flair. While they still hold onto their indie-pop roots, there's a definite cinematic and experimental twist, hinting at their film-school backgrounds. The title 'Static' nails that feeling of being stuck in limbo, waiting for something big to happen, which flows through the lyrics about disappointment, longing, and tricky relationships.
You can feel the emotional undercurrent, especially knowing the band members were going through a personal breakup. The album isn’t shy about letting you into that introspective space. Musically, it's cool to hear the glockenspiel and a retro 60s and 70s film-score vibe. The production really ties it all together into a cinematic package. There are 11 solid tracks, with gems like 'High Road' and 'We’ve Got It' standing out, blending catchy tunes with atmospheric layers. 'Static' might not grab you as quickly as their first album, but it’s a deeper, more mature listen that grows on you the more you dive into it. - Ethan
