Review

'Lay It Down' captures Cowboy Junkies at a fascinating turning point, trading their blues and country roots for meatier rock textures without losing their contemplative soul. The 1996 release strikes a perfect balance between grit and grace - Margo Timmins' voice floats hauntingly over dense guitar work that occasionally channels Neil Young's Crazy Horse (especially on tracks like 'A Common Disaster'). This marks their first album of completely original material, and the confidence shows in every note.

John Keane's production brings an Athens, GA indie-rock sensibility that perfectly complements the band's evolution. The emotional centerpiece might be 'Come Calling,' offered in two gender perspectives as it tackles Alzheimer's disease with remarkable sensitivity. The title track has this gorgeous Paisley Underground shimmer that feels both nostalgic and completely fresh. What fascinates me most about Cowboy Junkies here is how they've managed to crank up the amplifiers without sacrificing any of the intimacy that made their earlier work so special. - Lila
