Review

Cody Johnson's "Human: The Double Album," is truly a wellspring of country bliss since its debut in October 2021. As his eighth studio creation and his second delivery for a major label, Johnson's seen a marvelous leap in his skill as both a songwriter and performer. This double dose of country soul beautifully reveals Johnson's multidimensional nature, inviting you to step into his storytelling world.

Woven into the album are two parts that each lean on Johnson's flexibility and profound wisdom. "Human," the album-opener, sweeps you up with its soul-baring and reflective lyrics. Tracks such as "God Bless the Boy (Cori’s Song)," a loving nod to his daughter, and "Made a Home," which grapples tenderly with the marriage dance of trials and triumphs, showcase a theme of vulnerability. Yet, sprightly gems like "Cowboy Scale of 1 to 10" with Dale Brisby and a merry crew, add a dash of humor and liveliness.

Rooted deeply in traditional country soil, Johnson's album tips its hat to the venerable giants of yore. You'll hear whispers of history in "Sad Songs and Waltzes," co-starring Willie Nelson, while channeling greats with Vince Gill's very own "Son of a Ramblin’ Man." Producer Trent Willmon laces the album with that straightforward "red dirt country" flavor, putting Johnson's voice and storytelling right in the spotlight. A vibrant nod to his roots and flavors of fresh, familiar country paths make "Human: The Double Album", a fine slice of Cody Johnson's musical journey. - Maggie
