Review
"Follow the Reaper" by Children of Bodom is a real headbanger, folks. Released in 2000, this album marked a turning point for the band, blending their melodic death metal roots with a hefty dose of power metal. The result? A sonic assault that's both technically impressive and catchy as hell.
The guitar work on this record is absolutely mind-blowing. Alexi Laiho's fretboard wizardry is on full display, particularly in tracks like "Everytime I Die" and "Hate Me!" These songs have become live favorites, and it's easy to see why - they're packed with energy and showcase the band's ridiculous musical chops.
What's interesting about "Follow the Reaper" is that there are two different mixes floating around out there. The Nuclear Blast version has Peter Tägtgren's original mix, while releases on other labels feature a mix by Mikko Karmila. There are some subtle differences between the two, like a missing scream in the title track on Karmila's version. It's a neat little tidbit for the die-hard fans to argue about. Either way, this album is a cornerstone of melodic death metal and continues to influence bands to this day. - Ellis
