Review
'The rest' by boygenius feels like a late-night heart-to-heart with your closest friends. This EP, released in October 2023, is a beautiful follow-up to their album 'the record'. It's just four songs, but each one packs an emotional punch that left me reeling.
I found myself completely lost in the opening track, 'Black Hole'. It starts so quietly, with just a single piano note, but then it blooms into this gorgeous full-band sound. The way they blend the everyday with the cosmic is just... wow. It got me thinking about how small we are in the grand scheme of things, but also how our feelings can feel as vast as the universe itself.
The other songs on the EP are equally captivating. 'Afraid of Heights', 'Voyager', and 'Powers' each showcase the individual talents of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus, while still feeling like a cohesive whole. I was particularly moved by 'Powers', Julien Baker's acoustic ballad. It's a song about feeling different and small, but it left me with this spark of hope. It's like boygenius took all my jumbled thoughts about existence and turned them into something beautiful. - Lexi
