Review

With "13," Blur practically tossed their Britpop passport in the bin and set sail for weirder waters. There's this lush, unpredictable vibe running through the album, like "Tender" pulling at your heartstrings with gospel influences, then suddenly "Bugman" comes crashing in with a wall of distortion. It kind of feels like every track is a new musical dare between the band members.

Damon Albarn’s lyrics peel back pretty much all facades, thanks in no small part to his breakup with Justine Frischmann—let’s just say "No Distance Left to Run" won’t do your eyeliner any favors. Graham Coxon’s guitar work is basically a musical mood ring, swinging from jagged to gentle at the flick of a wrist. If you’re the type who loves a surprise, those oddball moments with things like the Optigan organ on "Optigan 1" will keep you on your toes. Hey, even the scattered hidden tracks add to the sense you’re listening to someone’s gloriously messy diary—it's a beautiful kind of chaos. - Bianca
