Review

'Shot in the Dark' hits like a bourbon neat - straight to the point and packing a punch. Ashley Cooke's debut drops 24 tracks that could've been overwhelming but instead feels like flipping through a well-worn diary. Her voice drips with genuine emotion whether she's ripping through uptempo jams like 'Tastes Like' or slowing it down to twist the knife in your heart. When Cooke flips between heartbreak and telling her ex to kick rocks, you believe every damn word.

The album shines brightest in its collaborations, with Nate Smith bringing extra fire on the radio-ready 'See You Around' and Colbie Caillat delivering some serious lyrical goods on 'Mean Girl.' Jackson Dean shows up too, proving Cooke knows exactly who to call to elevate her already solid material. Between 'Running Back' and 'Your Place,' she proves she's not just another pretty voice in the crowded country scene - she's a storyteller who can make you feel everything from soul-crushing vulnerability to telling someone off with a smile. Country music needed this fresh blood, and Cooke delivered. - Peyton
