Review

I'm loving the vibe Arooj Aftab brings to her fourth studio album, 'Night Reign.' Released on May 31, 2024, this album marks a whole different chapter in her musical journey, yet still delivers that signature Aftab sound we adore. Following the massive success of 'Vulture Prince,' 'Night Reign' offers a shift in tone - more hopeful, more uplifting, and an altogether grander vision.

Aftab's got this voice that's like a blend of heaven and earth, rich and earthy and so very true. 'Night Reign' takes you on this beautiful trip where night comes alive as a world of enchantment, mischief, and beauty. Standouts like 'Bolo Na' knock my socks off - that bassline is heavy in the best possible way, while 'Raat Ki Rani' brings to mind the better days of Sade. And let's not forget the oh-so country 'Whiskey,' showcasing her fantastic range.

From Vijay Iyer to Cautious Clay, from Moor Mother to Kaki King, this record sees Aftab teaming up with some fantastic talents, including some bold experimentation like that very welcome streak of Auto-Tune in 'Raat Ki Rani.' Critics have given this a big thumbs-up for its bold innovation and true sound that keeps her spirit right where it should be - soaring free. What I love most is this whole hushed, emotionally charged thing she's got going on - it's intimate and tender in the best way possible. Overall, 'Night Reign' embodies Aftab's journey towards growth and her very unique perspective, bringing us the sweet sounds we so thoroughly appreciate. - Chase
