Review
Alice Phoebe Lou's 'Shelter' is a concise yet powerful exploration of personal growth and vulnerability. This 2023 release, coming after a brief musical hiatus, feels like turning the page to a new chapter in a compelling novel. The album's eight tracks, spanning a mere 30 minutes, weave a tight narrative that resonates with the raw honesty of a late-night confessional.
The production on 'Shelter' marks a departure from Lou's earlier lo-fi aesthetics, embracing a more expansive sound that's as layered as the emotional landscape it portrays. Tracks like 'Angel' and the titular 'Shelter' showcase this evolution, their intricate rhythms and lush instrumentation reminiscent of the rich, multifaceted prose of authors like Haruki Murakami. 'Lately' stands out as a particularly poignant track, Lou's emotive vocals taking center stage much like a protagonist's inner monologue in a well-crafted novel.
The album closes with 'My Girl', a folksy lullaby that serves as a gentle reminder of self-love and awareness. It's as if Lou is penning the epilogue to her own story, charting a course towards a brighter future. Throughout 'Shelter', Lou's unique personality and emotional depth shine through, making this brief but impactful album a testament to her growth as an artist and storyteller. - Josh
