'Jar of Flies' hit the scene in '94, and damn if it didn't flip the script on what we thought we knew about Alice in Chains. These Seattle grunge titans took a hard left turn, trading in their usual heavy riffage for a more stripped-down, acoustic vibe. And you know what? It worked like a charm.
Recorded in a whirlwind week at London Bridge Studio, this EP is a raw, unfiltered look into the band's psyche. It's got all the darkness you'd expect from Alice in Chains, but with a new layer of vulnerability that'll knock you on your ass. 'Rotten Apple' and 'Nutshell' are the standouts here, diving deep into the murky waters of addiction and isolation.
But it's not all doom and gloom. 'No Excuses' gives us a glimmer of hope, while 'Whale & Wasp' proves these guys can say more without words than most bands can with a full lyric sheet. And let's not forget the commercial success - this bad boy was the first EP to ever debut at number one on the Billboard 200. Four million copies sold worldwide? Not too shabby for a week's work. - Chase
