Review
I remember the first time I played 'DSU' through my crappy little apartment speakers back in 2014. Alex G had already been building this cult following with his Bandcamp releases, but this album felt like he was letting us peek into his actual bedroom where all the magic happened. The title stands for "Dream State University," which his sister apparently inspired - perfectly fitting for the hazy, intimate vibe that floats through all 13 tracks. In just over half an hour, he manages to create this whole world that feels both completely personal yet somehow universal.
The way Alex blends those gentle guitar lines with his raw vocals just hits different. There's something so genuine about tracks like 'After Ur Gone' and 'Serpent is Lord' - they're not trying to be anything they're not. The lo-fi production actually makes everything feel more authentic rather than less polished. I've always loved how his music feels like it's being recorded right next to you, with all the little imperfections that make it real. This album was definitely a turning point before he started getting more recognition, but it still holds up as some of his best work. Damn, now I need to go listen to it again! - Madi
